Southern Lakes
A playground of waterways and trails brings explorers to the Southern
Lakes region. For centuries, the area's high mountain passes were
important travel and trading routes for First Nations people. A route
through one of these passes, the Chilkoot Trail, gains notoriety as the
gateway to headwaters of the Yukon River that ferried thousands of gold
seekers to the Klondike gold fields.
our region boasts access to
picturesque glaciers. Pebbled mountain peaks at 6,886 ft., Jubille
Mountain and Montant Moutain at 7,280 ft. The St. Elias mountain range
northwest of us provided the rain-shadow and prevents ice accumulation to
the east of the mountains. Gold formulated because this area was not
scraped by glacial ice.
The Southern Lakes Region also boasts the
actual headwaters of the second longest river in Canada, the Mighty
Yukon. It runs 3,185 km, from the Southern Lakes region to the Bering Sea.
